Anurag Kashyap: “DevD offended a lot of patriarchal men”

‘DevD’ Director Anurag Kashyap during an interview talks about how his old movies affected Indian society. There is a Kashyap movie in theatres and there will always exist a controversy revolving around his films. This time it is #BoycottBollywood his drama films he picks out certain truths from society. His films have been receiving love and hate simultaneously. He is claimed as one of the best directors in the industry as his films always give a different perspective to people.

While talking about his film Dev-D,  Anurag Kashyap said,

“I cannot make DevD now. Because it offends the sensibility of a lot of patriarchal men. I remember those reactions and those letters written to me and the messages on facebook. And things like ‘What kind of culture are you propagating? Where a woman is carrying her own mattress because she wants to have sex!’”

His move of empowering women by talking freely about their sexuality took a U-turn with patriarchal Indian men being offended.

“Because of the intimate discussion between Dev and Paro in the starting scenes, many people think i am responsible for the cultural decline of our sanskriti. ”

While he talks about Bollywood’s failure, pinpoints mistakes and also gives suggestions on how to fix the problem in the industry. He further adds what kind of films can work and what kind of films he likes to make. Talking about genre films, he said,

“Filmmakers do not want to change the world. Filmmakers are just trying to express what is bothering them.”

He talks about his most successful film and why other films are not working right now.

“My biggest success is Manmarziyan but it is not at the successful standard of the industry. It has become hard to make such movies because everybody is scared. Easiest option is to make remakes and I don’t want to make remakes.”

Anurag Kashyap also talks about how he ended up making No Smoking(2007). He says,

“Industry also used to call me manhoos. That is also the time people stole a lot of my scripts and my credit. So no smoking came from there where literally it’s like a film about me who smokes a lot who makes this kind of film and everybody telling him ‘Don’t do that’”.

Even with absurd controversies, his movies have been loved by the audience. It is only because of the Desi hints in his movies. The Desi feeling is relatable and fun to watch. The audience expects our culture, our Desi-pan in Hindi films.
