Anurag Kashyap: “There is no more awe left for stars”

In an interview, the director of Gangs of Wasseypur, Anurag Kashyap threw light on many subjects including the failure of Bollywood, his old films, and how YRF and Dharma movies worked. Though he also acknowledges how those movies do not work now. He sheds light on the issue and says,

They are looking. Right now, nothing. Everybody is looking. Everybody is looking because everyone is scared and confused.

When asked about why big star films in Bollywood fail today, Anurag Kashyap said,

The way the trolling you see happens online, Suddenly social media has empowered people. Awe used to happen because you couldn’t reach them. You only saw them on screen. Now you can go and shit on them. By chance they start interacting with you, then the awe further goes away. There is no wonder left for the stars. The film cannot work on the basis of a star.

While talking about why big Bollywood studio films worked earlier, He said,

It is based on the confidence that the films were put out by big studios. And we all used to look forward to ‘Kya work karta hai, kya nahi work karta’ towards YRF, towards Dharma. Excel was still making films. There are two kinds of films- Zoya films and the rest of the Excel films. They are of very different standards.

Adding to that, he also answers why YRF and Dharma films do not work anymore. He adds,

“They were working at one point. I have realized at the end of the day, your film will work only when it speaks to the audience and now the audience has also realized that they used to be awed by the stars. There is no more awe left for the stars.”

He talks about his fondness for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara’s director Zoya Akhtar’s films.

“Excel was not the barometer of telling us where it is heading. I am just curious to watch what Zoya is making.”

Anurag Kashyap comes in the sensible director’s list in Bollywood because of his knowledge of the film-making and also the viewers. He doesn’t think that people will buy anything you sell. He knows his audience. He has created a fine loop of Desi movies and Desi audiences.
